In my experience the last hold-out when going “green” and non-toxic is making the switch to non-toxic beauty products. Maybe it’s because CoverGirl and Lancôme are so good at marketing or perhaps it is because when organic beauty products first came on the scene they were expensive and the offerings lackluster.
Thankfully, those days are long behind us and ‘green beauty’ rivals if not far surpasses conventional beauty products.
Mascara is most often the very last thing we change because, let’s face it, there weren’t many on the scene that were overwhelmingly amazing and most were simply clumpy runny messes….until now! And since our eyes are probably the most important feature we want to play up, if the mascara doesn’t create the perfect “doe eye” then, even with conventional mascara, we tend to toss it, quickly, and move on to the next.
Suddenly, in the last three years, several companies have burst on the scene with their mascaras. I have tried pretty much all of them and some are still, well, underwhelming, but a few have really captured my attention.
I should preface the list by saying, I am not, have never been, nor ever will be a gal that likes “natural” looking lashes. Even though I am very blonde and I have been told that blondes should try brown mascara, I grew up during a time where Cindy Crawford was going on Oprah saying that black mascara was like a little black dress for your face. I have never been one that just wants a “little” darkening. Nope, not me. I want a full on, lengthened, volumized ‘va va va voom’ look during the day and a ‘false eyelash’ effect at night. (And considering I HATE false eyelashes in general I ask a lot of my mascara!)
Without further adieu, here are my top picks, yes, in a particular order!
#5 Alima Pure Natural Definition Mascara- I love Alima Pure for absolutely everything and I do love this mascara though, to me, it is the lightest, most natural one of the group. I am sure it is buildable but I rarely have the patience to put more than two coats on at a time. It is a nice day mascara and perfect for those of you who prefer a more natural look. For me, it is a great mascara on the days when I don’t want to wear ANY makeup and I change my mind when someone pops by unexpectedly or I need to dash down to the market and don’t have the time to do much more than mascara and gloss. It doesn’t clump and stays on nicely. It comes off very easily with normal cleanser.
#4 Kjaer Weis Mascara- This Danish brand always gets high praises from me for rich eye colors, their new creamy foundation, natural blushes and lip colors and elegant refillable packaging. Their mascara was certainly a great addition to an already stellar line. It too didn’t give me the effect I was looking for totally but is more able to be built with a few coats than the former. It is very darkening, which is great but it CAN flake after a day of wear; not terribly but enough that it doesn’t get a higher spot than fourth place. It smells divine with lavender water and rose flower oil and conditions beautifully with castor oil (my secret to long strong eyelashes!).
#3 100% Pure Fruit Pigmented Mascara- The choice between our #2 pick and this one was a tough one. I love them both. This one darkens, lengthens and volumizes beautifully. It is water resistant to the point it will withstand a good cry. All of these mascaras condition lashes, thankfully, but this one, I can actually feel my lashes stronger with less “fall” after wearing it. It is B-5, Vitamin E and Oat and Wheat protein enriched. (This is NOT gluten-free and if you have Celiac Disease or a strong allergy to gluten this is not your mascara.)
#2 Earth Lab Raw Mascara- This botanically enriched “raw” mascara has won high praises from me in 2012 Top Picks. It never clumps, darkens, thickens, lengthens, doesn’t flake, and is generally my favorite of all my mascaras for made up ‘day into night’. It is not as well known as some of the others but this ‘dark horse’ is a permanent part of my rotation.
#1 W3LL People Expressionist Bio Extreme Mascara has won top spot for the brush alone! I can reach absolutely every lash and the distribution of mascara is amazing, with no clumps, no ‘spider eyes’. Pure mineral pigments create the blackest of black, voluminous and lengthened lashes with only a few coats. I have created the false eyelash effect for evenings out easily and effortlessly. I am sure, if you were so inclined, you could create a natural look, but since that is never what I am going for this wins the prize for color, volume and lengthening. I am totally in love with this brand as a whole but their mascara is really irreplaceable in my view.
