We are so fortunate today to have a guest post from the founder of probably my all-time favorite skincare line ever, One Love Organics.  I do not say that lightly.  In  most lines I have things I like, maybe one or two products I love, and some that I just don’t get or that don’t work for my skin.  Suzanne LeRoux (I know, very elegant name, eh??  I liken it to Coco Chanel.  Very catchy!) had a passion, a vision to create a skincare line that is so effective it did not need 100 different products to do the job of a few.  She succeeded in creating a pure, natural, and ultra-effective skincare line that literally has something for everyone because her products work on every skin type or skin issue.  Her Skin Savior Waterless Beauty Balm ended up saving me one day when going through the Istanbul airport, an overzealous security guard took all my little travel essential skincare products leaving me only with this balm for the entire flight to Tokyo.  That’s a long flight without my 20 different potions.  This little jar (Suzanne was kind enough to send me to try) became my cleanser, face mask, hair tamer (makes an amazing moisturizer for dry ends), hand cream…… Well, you get the picture.  Since that day I have become her biggest fan!!  She has just come out with a Chia Whip cleanser and Supercritical Chia Oil based on…you guessed it, chia seeds, high in antioxidants and Omega-3 and bound to put a glow on your skin (not to mention your hair if you use the Chia Whip as a base for your Homemade Coconut Milk Shampoo (It would be an amazing replacement for the plain coconut soap!).

Ok, I am all done blathering about how much I love this woman and her products.  Below is her take on what should be missing in your skincare products and the explanation may shock you….

Suzanne Making Product

Have you ever tried what you thought was going to be a wonderful, healthy, moisturizing product on your skin, only to find that it caused irritation, or even rosacea-like symptoms? Yikes! We’ve been there too and know what you are thinking. “What gives? The active ingredients sounded so great. And it’s natural! I’m not putting chemicals on my face.” This is when we look to see if there any fillers (including water if it’s a moisturizer), preservatives, or emulsifiers in the ingredient list. Fillers give no benefit to the skin and in the case of water can actually be drying in a product meant to moisturize. Preservatives can be irritating to the skin. But we find emulsifiers to be the hidden culprit in many skin irritations caused by use of a product with otherwise quality ingredients.

And this brings us to the nub of the problem: Most cosmetic preparations, including moisturizers, contain as much as 60-90% water, which is held in suspension by an emulsifier. Emulsifiers are good at keeping dissimilar elements combined, such as oil and water, and cosmetic formulations typically combine various ingredients together in this way in an effort to deliver them to the skin and keep them stable. But cosmetic emulsifiers are usually (soap-based) surfactants. When used in cleansing gel or shampoo, emulsifiers do not pose much of a problem because they are washed off during use. However, when moisturizing is the goal, our findings agree with those of skincare researcher Dr. David Pollock, who has observed that emulsion preparations found in skin treatments tend to interfere with the natural restorative function of the skin. The water-based ingredients in the product evaporate, while the oil-based ingredients are absorbed, leaving the emulsifiers on the skin’s surface. These alkaline, soap-like substances then combine with the lipid content of the skin, removing precious oils the next time we wash. Moreover, their alkalinity disturbs the natural pH balance of the skin (which is slightly acidic), leaving it more susceptible to microbial growth. (One of the many reasons why we recommend cleansing with pure plant oils, which do not have a pH value and therefore, do not impact your skin’s own pH balance in any way.) In an effort to rebalance, the skin may then overproduce natural oils and sebum as it fights to reestablish its natural state. Inflammation and irritation can develop, and the end result can be dry, blemished, irritated and/or prematurely aging skin. Quite the opposite of what we want when we reach for our favorite moisturizer, foundation or sunscreen!

When this happens, it is not only a great disappointment but can be a cause for real concern. We had one client come to us with extreme skin sensitivities and irritation. She had tried everything… from the dermatologist’s recommendations to drugstore brands to high-end department store brands. At every turn her skin just got worse. By the time she came to us, she didn’t have much hope, but gave our products a try. At One Love Organics our hydration formulas (Skin Savior Waterless Beauty Balm, Morning Glory Brightening Complexion Booster, and Love Springs Eternal Youth Preservation Serum) are 100% water and emulsifier free, so skin is able to balance and hydrate when treated with our carefully selected pure plant oils and essences. She was amazed to find her skin made a quick and remarkable turnaround. She literally can’t believe that she now has beautiful skin, free of any irritation. But we can. That’s the power of using only the highest quality, most effective ingredients that directly benefit your skin.
